The salary surveys say a tutor in Canada earns about $24 an hour. Families are routinely quoted three times that. Both numbers are accurate, and the distance between them is the whole story of how tutoring is priced in this country.
What Tutoring Costs Per Hour in Canada
There is no single tutoring rate in Canada, because two different markets share one job title. In the first, a tutor is an hourly employee of a learning centre. In the second, a tutor is independent and sets their own price. They pay very differently, and almost every published average quietly mixes them together.
For employed tutors, Indeed puts the average at $24.04 an hour from 5,400 reported salaries, with most falling between $18.15 and $37.51 (Indeed Canada, September 2026). PayScale's median is lower again at $19.93, inside a 10th to 90th percentile band of $15.12 to $29.37 (PayScale, May 2026).
For independent tutors, the picture is completely different. Indeed's pay guide puts student tutors at $10 to $20 an hour and university and college students at $12 to $16, rising to $100 or more for a certified teacher with years of experience behind them (Indeed Canada, August 2026).
So the working range a family meets runs from roughly $15 an hour to $100 or more, and the largest single determinant is not the subject and not the city. It is whether the person teaching holds a provincial teaching certificate.
Why the Surveys Say $24 and the Quote Says $80
A salary survey measures what an employer pays. A learning centre hires the tutor, fills their schedule, advertises to families, collects the payment and keeps the difference. The tutor is paid a wage out of what the family pays, not the whole of it. That is how a centre can bill $80 an hour and report a $24 wage, with both figures true at once.
An independent certified teacher sits on the other side of that arithmetic. They carry the planning, the assessment, the parent updates, the scheduling and the invoicing, and they keep what they charge. The higher number is not a markup on the same service. It is the same teaching with the middle removed.
For a family comparing quotes, that gives a far more useful question than "what is the going rate". Ask what share of the hourly rate reaches the person who will actually be teaching, and ask what that person is qualified to teach.
What a Certified Teacher's Hour Is Already Worth
Any teacher working out what to charge has a reference point that pricing guides almost never mention: their own classroom wage. Job Bank's national wage data, drawn from the Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey, puts elementary and kindergarten teachers at a median of $43.27 an hour within a range of $26.67 to $56.59, and secondary school teachers at a median of $45.67 within a range of $28.85 to $59.76 (Job Bank, updated November 2025).
Provincially, secondary teaching runs $29.33 to $61.54 in Ontario, $28.85 to $60.18 in British Columbia and $27.47 to $56.49 in Quebec (Job Bank, updated November 2025).
Those wages come with something tutoring does not. Job Bank reports that 97.2 percent of secondary teachers receive at least one non-wage benefit, a category that covers pensions, insurance and paid leave. Independent tutoring has none of it, and the tutor also absorbs planning time, travel and the occasional cancellation.
The conclusion is more concrete than the usual advice to "research your market". A tutoring rate that merely matches your classroom median is a pay cut once the missing benefits and the unpaid preparation are counted. The mid $40s is a floor rather than a target, and the in-person premium exists because travel is real, unpaid time.
What Moves the Rate Up or Down
Format
Online sessions price below in-person work, generally by $15 to $30 an hour, because nobody is travelling and a tutor can fit more students into a week. In-person work carries the travel and the materials, and it is the format most often asked for with younger children and with students who need a structured setting. Sessions held at a public library sit between the two.
Subject and grade
Senior mathematics and the sciences carry the clearest premium, and the reason is supply rather than difficulty: far fewer tutors are genuinely comfortable with Grade 11 and 12 functions, calculus, chemistry and physics. Elementary literacy and numeracy price lower. University entrance and standardized test preparation price highest of all.
Qualifications
A teaching certificate is the biggest single step in the range. Past that, additional qualifications in special education, mathematics or reading intervention justify more again, because they are precisely what a family with one specific problem is searching for.
Special education
Tutoring a student with an identified exceptionality takes longer to plan and draws on training a general tutor does not have. Structured literacy and Orton-Gillingham work, attention and executive function strategy, and tutoring aligned to an individual education plan all sit at the upper end of the market. The planning behind the session is the reason, not the hour itself.
Where you are
City rates run above rural ones. The employment data shows the same pattern at a smaller scale, with Indeed's provincial averages for employed tutors at $25.22 in British Columbia and $23.51 in Ontario, and Toronto at $24.22 (Indeed Canada, September 2026). Independent rates spread much wider than that, because an independent tutor is priced against what local families will pay rather than against a centre's wage scale.
How to Set a Rate, or Judge One
If you are a certified teacher setting your own price:
- Begin at your own classroom hourly wage, then add for the absence of benefits and for planning you are not paid for. That puts most teachers above the mid $40s before any specialization is counted.
- Quote format separately instead of naming one number for everything. Travel is time, and in-person work should say so.
- Charge for what is scarce. If you can carry Grade 12 calculus or run a structured literacy intervention, that is your rate for that work, not your general rate.
- Treat the income as self-employment. It is reportable to the Canada Revenue Agency, and the expenses that come with it are deductible against it.
If you are a parent judging a quote:
- Ask what the tutor is certified to teach, and with which province's college of teachers they are in good standing. A certificate is something you can verify.
- Ask who writes the learning plan and who does the assessment. A low rate that buys worksheet supervision is not cheaper than a higher rate that buys teaching.
- Ask, if you are booking through an agency, what share of the hourly rate reaches the tutor.
- Judge the arrangement on whether the work changed, not on the rate. The marks follow the work, and a report card will tell you before a receipt does.
